Chitin and Chitosan

wp_20161024_002Pennosan is focused on developing chitosan formulations for environmentally beneficial applications, particularly water and waste water treatment and natural and organic horticultural applications.

Chitosan is produced from the natural polymer chitin, which gives the shells of crustaceans, shellfish, insects and fungi their structure and shape. Chitin is the second most abundant natural polymer on earth after cellulose. Despite it being plentiful, its use in nature means that it is difficult to extract in a clean and non-polluting way.

Our chitosan is derived from chitin from sustainable sources, namely crustacean shell waste, which is a by-product from the food industry. Pennosan can supply chitin and chitosan from a variety of crustacean sources and we are continually seeking to develop new chitosan products from chitin that has been produced using our proprietary, environmentally-friendly natural extraction approaches.
